Rabid Rabbit had a spectacular weekend starting at the exceptional pre-MoCCA party for Rabid Rabbit and C'est Bon at Bergen Street Comics. Tom and Amy have a great comic shop and were fun and generous hosts of the book release and original art show (If haven't been to it- GO, you won't regret it!) . Then came MoCCA fest 2011- good times all around! talked to tons of amazing people sold a lot of books. Next weekend Paul Hoppe and C.M.Butzer will be representing Rabid Rabbit at the Stumptown Comic Festival in Portland, Oregon. Can't wait!

From all the fun that is. The terrible, terrible 80 proof fun that we had so very much of. The Brooklyn Comics & Graphic Arts Festival was amazing. There was so much good work there that we could barely contain ourselves. Rabid Rabbit 12- "Rabid Rabbit goes to Hell" had a jaw dropping debut! Books literally flew off the shelves. Thanks to all the friends and contributors who stopped by our table which is lovingly rendered there by Mr.Paul Hoppe (who in turn debuted his latest gonzo super hero tale: Tales to Behold). Great show all around.. and great after party in which much fun was consumed.

Yes- it's been a long while between posts but your ever enduring/suffering and sometimes even a little whimpering Rabbits have been busy busy bunnies (With a new issue in the works no less!) But they haven't been mindlessly sitting in front of the tube for boobs! they've been out there conquering and making illustrations and stuffs!

On that note your truly beloved/despised Editor in Chief C.M.Butzer is now on display (his work- not him... thank god) at the Society of Illustrators- A spread from his book Gettysburg- The graphic novel was selected by the society to be a part of the Orginal Art show 2009. But low and behold he is not alone- Three Rabbit contributors were also selected! Lauren Castillo! Tae Eun Yoo! and silver medaled Brian Floca! Paul Hoppe was there too- as arm-candy- don't picture it!

Yep- been quiet in Rabid Rabbitville- often is through the middle of the summer. Recovering from the MoCCA festival is usually priority one. But mind you just because its quiet doesn't mean we're all lounging around the pool slurping endless fuzzy navels (Except for Ben). We've started thinking about our next foray and will keep you updated- hopefully more often than not!

This studio residency offers artists the opportunity to explore the wealth of resources available to professional illustrators in New York City while developing a portfolio of work that embodies personal vision.

With guidance from successful, award-winning illustrators, participants will complete a body of work comprised of images created from assigned projects, as well as those self-directed by the artist, with the aim of showcasing personal style and aesthetic direction. The goals are to advance to the next level of artistic practice and to attain an enhanced position in the illustration marketplace.

Faculty critiques—individual and group—and visits to professional studios will complement independent work; together these initiatives form an intense program that fosters professional growth and an expansion of personal voice.

Special lectures by guest artists, gallery directors, publishers and art directors are designed to provide additional insight regarding the realities of a career in illustration. Participants have access to a digital facility, as well as the opportunity to work in a variety of mediums. The program culminates in an exhibition.

Faculty and lecturers have included Marshall Arisman, Paul Buckley, Gregory Crane, Paul Hoppe, Viktor Koen and Cheryl Phelps.

In issue #9, our latest issue, the foward was written by notable comic historian N.C.Couch. Of course he did a spectacular opening so much so, that due to space constraints we could not publish it completely. The full text is published here now and below!

The Horror of the Every-Day

N. C. Christopher Couch

When Bill Gaines set out to create entertaining comics, he and his gang of idiosyncratic and talented writers and artists tapped a vein of American literature singularly appropriate for the suffocating and conformist 1950s. Tight girdles and tighter minds, business boosterism and soul-deadening suburbs, McCarthyism and repression aimed at artists and poltical activists were the order of the day. Gaines’s dad’s death in a freak accident in 1947 left him publisher of a faltering company, Educational Comics. Bill, plus Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, Wally Wood and a stellar crew turned Educational into EC, the home of horror, terror, and weird, all words soon to be banned from comic book titles by the Comics Code of 1954.

Uniquely American horror fiction poured from the pen of Howard Philips Lovecraft and his peers early in the 20th century, setting the background for Gaines, King and other modern masters. In his Supernatural Horror in Literature, H.P. said “the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown… the true weird tale has…a malign and particular suspension or defeat of those fixed laws of Nature which are our only safeguard against the assaults of chaos and the daemons of unplumbed space.” Creepy. The Cthulhu stories and others chilled our spines with ancient evil. Gaines and his gang loved classic horror, but instead of the eldritch past or the chasm of space, they found fear in our own homes and towns. Suburban neighbors and upright citizens, teachers and baseball players, our children, our wives and husbands—these were the loci of evil in the EC stories of the haunted 1950s.

Everyday horror lives in these Rabid Rabbit pages, too, from Aya Kakeda’s and Kripa Joshi’s ‘[un]happy meals’ to Tao Neu’s and Chadwick Whitehead’s bathroom agonies to Sakura Maku’s dead-on daily typography (“rent bills”). Menace in ordinary places looms in the haunted cityscapes of Paul Hoppe and Edwin Vaskez, in the kitschy Joisey gardens of Dunja Jankovic, and the biomorphic forests of Ben Sea. It’s no day at the beach in Fay Ryu’s freaky Coney Island, or Adam Kidder’s perfect surfing spot, No bed or bedroom is safe in the nightmare tales of Marion Vitus and Sofia Falkenhem and the viscera(l) story by Matt Rota. Child’s play becomes terror in S.Y. Choi’s basement and Sal Amendola’s haunted house, and teen love in high school halls becomes a true horror in Reuben Negrón’s affecting “Horror 88.” Frustrated teen love goes to sea in a boat drawn by John Green for Dave Roman’s mermaid fantasy.

EC stories had plenty of Siamese twins, given the fairy-tale treatment by Wendi Koontz (fractured fairy tales were also an EC standby), while Ye Ed and Choi recall EC horror hosts in their Zombie-fest jam. The ’50s had monster movies aplenty. Anuj Shrestha takes a leaf from Mad magazine (the only EC comic to survive the Code) and its movie satires, Ben Marra channels Gene Colan and takes superhero movies to hell, while Chris Butzer turns his Hawk’s eye on Arctic aliens, suggesting he has a thing for Campbellian SF. Lovecraft would have loved the malign daemons that haunt the mythological Mexico of Andres Vera Martinez.

I think it is, but some would say it's just doing what it evolved to do, which is evil, so if something is born with an evil purpose but has a sunny personality is it still evil?). Choi has done an amazing job with this challenging project drawing the true tragedy of one woman's loss of her husband in the 9/11 attacks. This book has been long in the making and we are all excited for its release!

ICON 5 Conference

Rabid Rabbit Art Director Paul Hoppe and contributor Lauren Castillo were at the ICON illustration conference at the Roosevelt Hotel in NYC and had a blast. Rabbits were passed out, postcards distributed, and friendships established.
Past and present Rabid Rabbit affiliates such as Steven Guarnaccia, Nora Krug, John Hendrix, Sam Weber and Jillian Tamaki were enjoying the presentations and / or partying the night away afterwards.

influential NY Public Librarian, Betsy Bird has noted C.M.Butzer (Rabbit co-founder and contributor) in her blog at the School Library Journal. Betsy's blog is highly regarded and widely read in the industry. She wrote up a review of the Harper Librarian Preview and focused in nice detail on "GETTYSBURG, the graphic novel" by C.M.Butzer.

"Ah. Good table this. Brenda Bowen, Molly O'Neill, Anne Hoppe, and Ruth Katcher were present. Actually, before we sat at this table we had a break and I sorta sidled up to Brenda's pile of books to get a better look at a graphic novel I saw sitting there. Marking this as the
Lincoln Book #1 of the day, there sat The Graphic Gettysburg by C.M.Butzer (you can see one of his images of Lincoln on his website ). I got very excited. I mean, all the speech bubbles are from direct quotes of the day. The primary colors used throughout the story are blue and gray. Altogether it looked neat and original and like nothing I've ever really seen before. Non-fiction meets the graphic format. Of course it won't be out until 2009 (boo, hiss) but there's nothing to be done about that."

Go see the Persepolis movie, if you haven't already! It's a must for all who are in the visual arts. As we're all more or less conciously conditioned by Disney, Manga, and TV Cartoons, it's great to see such an outstanding visual language, that reminds you: "Hey, yeah, there's actually plenty other ways to do an animated film!"

The second one is Across The Universe, of which I was a little secptical first, but it's really quite entertaining. There's so many insider references for all you Beatles-Geeks out there. But most of all, it contains some great visual effects that do NOT rely on 3D-modelling! (mostly in "For the benefit of Mr. Kite"). Yes, another case of, "Hey, yeah, threre's actually plenty other ways" etc etc.

After a break from all bunny activites, Team Rabbit is getting ready for an exciting new year. Rabid Rabbit 7 is doing well and being distributed to comic stores near you. The latest addition is Atomic Books in Baltimore.

Besides that and many locations in the New York area, we're also in Chicago, Portland, Berkeley CA, Los Angeles and Seattle! Ask your local comic book retailer for Rabid Rabbit 4 through 7! 1 through 3.5 are now more or less out of print, with a few copies available online, and at the MoCCA Festival this summer.

The contemporary brownstones of Cobble Hill buried beneath its original namesake hill, a big whale in the place of the Museum of Natural History, and The New York Crystal Palace returned to 42nd Street.

In short, a New York City that is the forgotten past and the fantastic future all at once. A New York City where anything is possible.

Well, holy shit.
There ain't no better way to put this, other than...

Thank you.
Last night was evidence that this city believes in something truly beautiful, –and that's you. All of you. Whether you came to our little shabangabang for the comics, the booze, or the love, I want you to know that we felt it: that special heartwarming sense of everything coming together perfectly, just like the end of Breakfast Club when Judd Nelson raises his fist triumphantly into the air.

Because making comics is a lonely world –full of back-aching, wrist-cramping, long hours bent over a drafting table.... but last night, ya'll made "making comics" synonymous with sexy. That feat alone merits unfettered accolades and our profoundest gratitude.

So we're glad you braved the New York winds to join us last night. We hope ya had a great time. If you did, let us know; because we'll probably do the whole thing again. And the sequel's always better than the original, right?

The American Illustration 26 Release Party was last night. The new annual was on display as an advance copy, and all winning entries were hung on the wall.

The Original Art 2007

The Society of Illustrators is currently showing the Original Art Show, an annual show celebrating the best in Children's Book Art. It is a great show for everybody who loves picture books.

Three selected artists have also been in Rabid Rabbit before: Lauren Castillo (with her book "What Happens on Wednesdays"), Brian Floca ("Lightship"), and, receiving the prestigious Founder's Award, Taeeun Yoo ('The Little Red Fish"). Congratulations to all selected artists!

"Rabid Rabbit’s Unabridged Hands-on Handbook to Recognizing and Evaluating the Fallacious and Scrupulous Traits of PORNOGRAPHY- A Users Manual!" The title of our latest issue literarily speaks volumes!

Featuring a cover by S.Y.Choi, a back cover by Fay Ryu, a centerspread by Wendi Koontz, many new contributors and comics, comics, comics! It will be our biggest issue to date, and our contributors sure had fun with the topic!

But make no mistake: This is not your usual smut-rag, (not that there would be anything wrong with that) it is a very diverse exploration into what Pornography is, what it means to people... So check out what all our artists came up with!

The release-party will be in November, and books will be in stores in a few weeks. We'll keep you posted!

Rabid Rabbit wins in Design and Illustration Competitions!

Rabid Rabbit scored in two major, highly selective competitions this year:

Print 's Regional Design Annual will feature Rabid Rabbit #5: "Rabid Rabbit's Alphabet City", our most conceptional and typographic book. The cover drawing is by the great Anton Van Dalen. Published by the renowned PRINT MAGAZINE, this Annual compiles the most innovatiove and creative projects in Graphic Design and Art-Direction.

Three by Three Illustration Annual will feature Paul Hoppe's Cover for Rabid Rabbit #4, "Rabid Rabbit's Trash". This contest is organized by 3x3 MAGAZINE for Contemporary Illustration and is juried by an international panel, selecting the best illustration from all over the world.

Together with the awesome American Illustration, this is the third time Rabid Rabbit won in a competition this year. Hooray!
